Opening Ceremony

Tonight in Nairn

The 2015 World Orienteering Championships Opening Ceremony begins at 16:45 tonight with the Nairn Pipe Band leading the parade of national teams into the Nairn Arena. When they are all in position in front of the podium everyone will be welcomed by Martin Ward, Chair of British Orienteering. He will introduce Councillor Laurie Fraser, Provost of Nairn, who will give his own welcome on behalf of Highland Council. The event will then be opened by International Orienteering Federation President Brian Porteous, after which the IOF flag will be raised as the pipe band plays.

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled to finish at 17:30, with Sprint Relay starting at 18:05.

Sprint Qualification – Report

Yannick Michiels impressed with a big win in his heatThe World Orienteering Championships began this evening in Forres with the Sprint Qualification race. There were big victories for some of the pre-race favourites, with Tove Alexandersson (Sweden) and Yannick Michiels (Belgium) winning by significant margins, while two previous Sprint bronze medallists – Lena Eliasson (Sweden) and Venla Niemi (Finland) – missed out on a place in the Final. Last year’s gold medallists Judith Wyder (Switzerland) and Søren Bobach (Denmark) finished 2nd and 4th respectively in their heats.

The world is coming to Scotland!

With entries having closed, we are delighted to confirm that 353 athletes from 49 countries will be coming to Scotland from as far afield as Japan, Colombia and Australia to compete in the 2015 World Orienteering Championships.

Four countries will be making their World Championships debut in Scotland: Cameroon, Egypt, Nepal and Uganda.

The full list of entries for the World Championships can be found on the IOF Eventor website.

A further 5,200 competitors will be taking part in the Scottish 6 Days public races that will run alongside the World Championships.

How can I follow the World Championships at home?

Remote spectating WOC2015

You can follow the World Championships at home online, with live video streaming, audio commentary, GPS tracking and results. Three races – the Sprint Relay, Sprint Final, and Relay – will be broadcast live on BBC Alba, with broadcasters in other countries also showing various live races or highlights packages.

Road Closures

Road closures

During the World Championships

With athletes racing at speed through towns and forests, some road closures and temporary speed restrictions will be necessary to ensure their safety. The organisers are very keen to make sure the local community are made aware of these road closures so they can plan ahead and avoid any problems.
